“With enemies like this, who needs friends?” might be an appropriate motto for the federal Liberals, who are maintaining unprecedented levels of continuing public support thanks in substantial measure to opposition weakness, according to a recent COMPAS/National Post poll conducted among a national sample of n=785 adults. Liberal support is at 51%, more than double the combined support for the Alliance and Progressive Conservative parties, as shown in the second table below.
While the Alliance remains battered at far less than half the level of support it earned in the federal election, the federal Tories continue to reap no benefit from the plight of their rightwing cousins. In an apparent gesture of “plague on both your houses,” many erstwhile rightwing voters continue to turn their backs on the two fratricidal rightwing parties. The absence of support for the two rightwing parties is all the more remarkable given the amount of positive media attention they are currently receiving for their efforts to negotiate common ground.
