Where Aboriginals Stand: Demonstrators Were Right, There Will Be More Land Ownership Demonstrations; Education and Health Spending Should Be the Priority; Not Transfer Payments, Policing, Suicide Prevention, or Housing

Demonstrators in Caledonia and Eastern Ontario were right, and there will be more such demonstrations over land ownership in seasons to come. These are strong and unambiguous findings from a recent, nation-wide poll among First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples conducted by COMPAS for the National Post (see Methodology section at end for details).

In other findings, Aboriginal Canadians express about equally middling confidence in their own leadership, the federal government, and provincial governments.

With respect to spending priorities, Aboriginal respondents place special emphasis on education and health. Policing, housing, and other areas of spending receive much lower priorities. Men and women agree on all issues except for a slightly greater emphasis on housing by women and policing, by men.
