Industry Minister Jim Prentice announced a new policy of scrutinizing the acquisitions of Canadian companies by foreign state enterprises (see http://www.cbc.ca/money/story/2007/12/07/takeovers.html). The COMPAS panel of CEOs and business leaders gave him high performance grades for the announcement—among the highest grades every received by a Canadian politician.

Panelists call for careful scrutiny above all in the case of state enterprises from countries engaged in supporting terror or violence. They also favour more careful scrutiny in the case of state enterprises from countries without a democratic tradition and that are less open to foreign investment than Canada.

These are the key findings from the current web-survey of the panel of CEOs and business leaders undertaken for the Canadian Business under sponsorship of BDO Dunwoody LLP.
