See-Saw Public Opinion on Playgrounds

Public opinion is divided over the Toronto District School Board’s decision to demolish playground equipment, according to a COMPAS poll conducted for the National Post on September 17, 2000. Respondents were prompted with “As you may know, the Toronto District School Board ordered the demolition or partial demolition of swings and other playground equipment at 172 schools this summer after it learned the sets didn't meet the latest Canadian Standards Association standards.” Respondents were then asked “How justified was the decision to tear down the equipment.” Half the respondents express opposition to the Board’s decision with 29% saying that it was “not at all justified” and another 21% saying the decision was “not really justified”. Nearly one third (27%) feel that the school board’s decision was “somewhat justified” while only 13% feel that it was “very justified”. The remaining 11% of respondents had “no opinion” about the school board’s decision (see table below for full distribution).
