The English-Speaking Leaders’ Debate:

In a debate that was watched at least in part by 53% of English-speaking Canadians, Joe Clark appears to have won the hearts of viewers and listeners. Clark, Day and to some extent Chretien have won their minds. Meanwhile Alexa McDonough has lost on both counts. Those are the general conclusions drawn from a representative sample poll of n=741 English-speaking Canadians who watched or listened to at least 5 minutes of the English-language leaders debate and were interviewed November 9th and 10th by professional interviewers using computer-assisted telephone interview technology.

As shown immediately below, Clark was the first choice for winner of the debate followed closely by Day and Chretien. Very few identified the NDP or Bloc leaders as winners of the debate. The straightforward question was “who won the debate.”
