11th Hour Strategies and the Impact of the Alliance’s Negative Campaign
A Public Opinion Report to The National Post, Southam News, and Global News from Fieldwork Conducted November 20-21

Borrowing a page from the Liberal party’s strategy book, the Alliance has been launching a vigorous negative campaign over the last few days, charging the Prime Minister with a serious breach of ethics and perhaps even of the criminal code. Just as the Liberals’ negative campaigning of the preceding two weeks drove up the Alliance party’s “negatives,” as reported in earlier COMPAS polling, so too has the Alliance party’s negative campaigning of the last few days damaged the Liberals.

Nationally, the Liberals have declined in popular support, as evidenced in the table below—down from 45% to 39%. The Liberal weakening is benefiting each of the opposition parties—apparent 1% increases for the NDP and Bloc and 2% increases for the Alliance and Tories. The Alliance is up from 25% to 27% and the Tories up from 10% to 12%.
