The overwhelming majority of Canadians, including the vast majority of Liberals, want independent fact-seeking to get to the bottom of the Parliamentary controversy over whether the Prime Minister was in conflict of interest as charged by the Opposition. The Prime Minister’s critics elicit a lot more confidence on this issue than his defenders though the federal Liberals would leak little support if the November federal election were re-run today.
To the extent that the controversy is affecting voter loyalties, Joe Clark’s Tories appear to be the winners, taking support away from both the Liberals and the Alliance. These are the main findings from a national, representative survey (n=500) conducted March 30-April 1, 2001. |
