Canadian business leaders feel that general M.B.A. degrees are no more valuable than other non-technical post-graduate degrees. Respondents in this Financial Post/COMPAS poll sponsored by CIBC and the Canadian Chamber of Commerce were asked to rate the value of a general M.B.A. degree relative to “other types of non-technical, post graduate education” when thinking about new hires. Respondents assign a near neutral mean value score of 4.2 on the 7 point scale. Nearly one third (28%) of respondents say that M.B.A. degrees offer less relative value (i.e. score “1”, “2”, or “3”) and another 24% of respondents see no difference in relative value (i.e. score “4”). Slightly less than one-half (45%) of the respondents say that M.B.A. degrees do offer more value (i.e. score “7”, “6”, or “5”). The precise wording of the question and the full distribution of responses are shown in table 1 below. The respondents in this study are CEOs and senior executives in the large, medium, and small companies that belong to the Canadian Chamber of Commerce.
