The main findings from this week’s COMPAS/FP panel of business leaders, sponsored by BDO Dunwoody LLP and the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, are that:
- The federal government gets a failing grade for fighting terrorism and a near failing grade for keeping the Canada-U.S. border open, and this perceived performance helps explain continued majority support for adopting U.S. border protocols;
- Expectations of a giant terrorist threat remain moderate (39% probability in U.S., 23% probability in Canada) but they are rising, possibly because of the influence of the recent White House alert; and
- There is declining business confidence in Ottawa’s management of the border along with a near-unanimous conviction that customs officials should be treated as an essential service.
