The present document highlights unique findings pertaining to Greater Vancouver that distinguish the GVA from the rest of Canada. The GVA data are drawn from a local n=339 survey, detailed below in the methodology section. National data are drawn from a national n=1000 survey, whose details are also provided below.
Key findings:
- GVA residents and fans are at least as interested in hockey as the remainder of the country but interest in the GVA in general and among GVA fans has fallen more as a result of the strike than in Canada as a whole, as shown in tables 1-3;
- Males are more likely to have been impacted by the strike (pre-strike mean of 3.9 vs. 2.4 post-strike among males; pre-strike mean of 3.6 vs. 2.5 post-strike among females, as shown in table 4);
- Both Vancouverites in general and fans in particular are divided about changing provincial law to allow replacement players, as shown in table 5; Hockey fans (42%) are more apt to be in favour of changing provincial law to allow the Vancouver team to employ non-union replacement players than are non fans (32%);
- A plurality reports increased respect for Trevor Linden, especially among fans, as shown in table 6; Hockey fans are over twice as likely as non-fans to say the strike has increased their respect for Canucks legend Trevor Linden (41% vs. 18%). Respect for Linden does not appear to vary across gender.
