A Key Week in the Gomery Sponsorship Scandal Inquiry
A National Post/COMPAS Poll |
||||
| The week of February 7th in the history of Gomery Inquiry into the Sponsorship Program scandal was a significant week. In unprecedented acts, the Prime Minister of the time and today’s incumbent testified before cameras. The Prime Minister of the time, the Rt. Hon. Jean Chretien, insisted that the Program had been vital for Canada’s survival. He displayed before the cameras Presidential and other high prestige golf balls to demonstrate that the golf balls and other Canadian-unity trinkets distributed by the Sponsorship Program were reasonable initiatives and not without precedent. Some commentators argued that Chretien scored a proverbial hole-in-one while others insisted that he performed egregiously. The National Post/COMPAS poll showed that all three main players earned failing grades from Canadians. Opposition Leader Harper performed at least as poorly as the others despite a public that repudiates the financial mismanagement of the Sponsorship Program, sees few intrinsic merits in the Program, and is unconvinced that it was necessary for winning the Quebec Referendum. Harper earned low grades partly because the public is confused about whether he is a same-old, same-old type of establishmentarian politician or whether he belongs to a new category of clean and effective practitioners. |
