Unions and Wal-Mart
A BDO Dunwoody/Chamber Weekly CEO/Business Leader Poll by COMPAS in the Financial Post
On balance, unions have “outlived their usefulness” and have too much power in Canada, according to Canadian business leaders and CEO’s. This question along with others about the roles and responsibilities of unions and employers were posed to the COMPAS weekly business panel on the heals of Wal-Mart closing a store in Quebec whose employees recently voted in favour of unionizing.

A sizable majority of respondents say Wal-Mart was right to close its store because business should be allowed to operate under a profitable business structure provided it follows the law. Few respondents agree that Wal-Mart’s decision was wrong because it unduly intimidates staff at other locations from exercising their legal right to unionize.

With respect to public sector unions, few business leaders support the right to strike for civil servants including federal and provincial government employees, teachers, and especially emergency workers.

These are the key findings of this week’s web-survey of Canadian CEOs and business leaders for publication in the Financial Post under the sponsorship of BDO Dunwoody and the Canadian Chamber of Commerce.
