Stronach
A BDO Dunwoody/Chamber Weekly CEO/Business Leader Poll by COMPAS in the Financial Post
Canada’s CEOs have mixed feelings about the addition of former Magna CEO to the Liberal Cabinet. Ultimately, respondents in this business panel agree with New Brunswick Premier Bernard Lord interpretation of the event, “This is just another action, another moment, that breeds cynicism of electors."
There is a fair amount of consensus among business leaders as to Stronach’s personal motivations for leaving, with only 8% saying she was motivated to leave by a sense of public service and 63% saying it was for the cabinet position.
In response to Stronach’s statement about the purpose behind her leaving the Conservatives and accepting a cabinet position, business leaders are divided as to whether
  • An election would have been in the country’s best interest, and;

  • Canada and the economy is better served by this Liberal Government and a Bloc Quebecois with its current seats in the House

With respect to market activity and the modest currency gains by the Loonie after the news of Stronach’s move, approximately half of the panel say the gains were a coincidence (45%) while about equal numbers say the gains were definitely of likely a market response to the news (14% + 36%).
These are the key findings from this week’s online survey of Canadian CEOs and business leaders for publication in the Financial Post under the sponsorship of BDO Dunwoody and the Canadian Chamber of Commerce.
