As late as fall, 2007, the COMPAS panel of CEOs and business leaders was moderately sympathetic to the climate change paradigm, not antagonistic to it. Last September, support outnumbered opposition by more than 2:1 in respect of the idea that “Canada’s priority must be to pay the necessary costs for cutting the use of fossil fuels.”
National Liberal party leader Stéphane Dion’s proposals for carbon taxes appear to be striking a nerve, contributing to more misgivings than in the past. In practice, panelists oppose the carbon tax. None of the reasons for supporting the tax earns majority support while all the reasons against the carbon tax elicit strong backing from the panel.
