What is the RDSP?
English / Français

The RDSP is a long term savings plan to help Canadians with disabilities and their families save for the future. To open a RDSP, a person must be approved for the Disability Tax Credit, be a resident of Canada, have a Social Insurance Number, and be under the age of 60 years.

What is the Disability Tax Credit (Disability Amount)?

The Disability Tax Credit is a non-refundable credit that reduces the amount of income tax that an individual with a severe and prolonged  disability may have to pay. A qualified practitioner must certify that an individual has an impairment that is both severe and prolonged with effects in one of these categories:

    1. Impairment with mental or physical functions that has lasted, or is expected to last, for a continuous period of at least 12 months;
    2. Marked restriction in a basic activity of daily living;
    3. Life-sustaining therapy; or
    4. The cumulative effect of significant restrictions.

For more information about the Disability Tax Credit, visit the Canada Revenue Agency Web site www.cra-arc.gc.ca/disability or call 1-800-959-8281 (TTY users call 1-800-665-0354).
